A visit to Maryland is never complete without sampling their seafood. Being a state that is abundant in coastal areas, it comes without being said that sea fare is a staple here. In fact, many tourists come all the way here just to sample the seafood they have to offer. A seafood festival is also dedicated to the business.
With a robust fishing industry, visitors can find many diverse food offerings. Like other places with a specialty, there is an abundance of seafood restaurants throughout the state. Our choices for the best six in Baltimore, Annapolis and Frederick are:
1. Bubba Gump Shrimp & Co.
Ironically, the first branch of this popular restaurant chain opened in California. However, it does not come as a surprise that it’s made its way all the way to Maryland. After all, where else would it be better to have a seafood restaurant than here?
Like its other chains, here at Bubba Gump Shrimp clients can enjoy casual dining. Located in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, guests enjoy a waterfront view as they dine. They serve all of the much loved food on the regular menu such as shrimp, gumbo and many more. Clients with allergies can also pick food from their gluten free menu. Happy hour is also endorsed in this branch.
2. Salty Dog’s Crab House
Crabs are always a big hit when it comes to seafood, and those who love this dish will also love this local restaurant. Don’t expect any fancy settings here, as this joint which has been around for a while now offers no-frills dining and good old plain seafood.
Frequented even by locals, it’s normal to see the place packed with people waiting to get served. They offer both in-house and take away food services with some of the best prices. It’s not uncommon to find patrons leaving the place with a bag of crabs in tow. What keeps people coming back for more is the delicious seasoning they have on their crabs. You can also enjoy other sea fare such as shrimp and scallops.
3. Thames Street Oyster House
Set right in the middle of historic Fells Point, those visiting this historic waterfront neighborhood can enjoy a meal or two here. Both visitors and locals can be found filling out the tables on a normal day. Those looking to enjoy their seafood in a more formal ambiance with a good glass of wine will certainly appreciate this place.
As the name implies, they specialize in seafood. You can expect to find at least ten different ala carte oyster dishes here daily. Of course, they also serve other seafood with their offerings covering both traditional and modern Mid-Atlantic cuisine. Thames Street Oyster House is also renowned for its raw seafood bar. Their main bar located on the second floor has a spectacular view of the waters. Happy hour can be enjoyed from Mondays through Fridays as well.
4. Carrol’s Creek Restaurant
Those who find themselves in the Annapolis area can enjoy dining right on the dock at this waterfront restaurant. Although the place may seem a little dated compared to other restaurants, it is perfect for those who enjoy quiet dining and good food. The relaxing view is a perfect accompaniment to their offerings.
Sea scallops, crab soup, shrimp stacks and fish are just some of the items to expect on the menu. Daily specials that are truly unique can also be expected. Aside from the good food and excellent service, this quaint place also offers a fairly good wine list to match.
5. Jimmy’s Famous Seafood
No list of Maryland seafood restaurants can be complete without this institution. Serving locals and tourists since 1974, guests can expect a different dining experience. With 5 different rooms that have different themes, each one offers something unique. Along with their extraordinary dining areas, Jimmy’s also has a live band and DJ.
More than entertainment, they also offer delicious meals. Sticking to classic Maryland comfort cuisine you can expect to find crab cakes, lobster and steamed crabs on the menu.
6. May’s Restaurant
Located in Frederick away from the many streamline restaurants is a food establishment that first made its appearance in 1959. Opening as a general store for the town, May’s eventually evolved into a popular food joint. The name comes from the last name of the family that established it. The May family still runs this restaurant to date.
A favorite among locals, it was voted as the best seafood restaurant in Frederick from 2006 to 2008. Diners can expect a lot of sea fare, including their famous soft shell crabs, crab legs and steamed crabs. They also offer flounder, scallops and oysters among other things on the menu. A kid friendly menu, aptly dubbed small fry gives families with small children an option as well.
